Prayon

Prayon is a rather dispersed hamlet covering an extensive area. The small village has a small more dense core around the former Cafe-Restaurant Dolent. Prayons recent growth has mainly been shaped by the construction of holiday chalets which dot the area. While some chalets have been built in transformed ‘granges’ barns, most of the chalets are newly purpose built. The hamlet, at 1,460 m altitude, has 21 permanent residents, and there are about 60 houses in the Prayon area which also includes the small hamlets of La Seiloz and La Verne.  Cafe Restaurant Dolent used to be the main reason to visit Prayon with a combination of friendly service and very good food. Unfortunately, the small restaurant closed its doors in 2022. But luckily enough, its owners Stephane and Sylvie Bloyet opened a new restaurant about 20 km down in the direction  of Martigny at the entrance to the Gorges du Durnand in Les Valettes (Bovernier). La Seiloz is a small hamlet just south of Prayon, on the other side of the bridge crossing the Torrent Idroz. The hamlet consists only of a few houses. A small and interesting private botanic garden can be found on the valley side of the road.

La Verne, situated further up the slope at an altitude of 1,580 m, is another small hamlet with only a few secondary houses. A derelict military bunker ii situated on the mountain slope on a short distance of the hamlet, a reminder of the days when the nearby border with Italy had to be defended. The public water tap is an asset for hikers passing through Le Seiloz.
